Paint or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets in 2027? A Houston Homeowner's Guide

Planning a kitchen refresh for 2027? Why Houston homeowners are painting instead of replacing cabinets, what it costs, how a sprayed finish holds up in Gulf Coast humidity, and when to book before spring fills up.

A full kitchen remodel keeps getting more expensive, and new cabinets are the biggest line on that bill. That is why kitchen cabinet painting is worth a look first: the same cabinets, a completely new look, for a fraction of the price and about a week of work. If a kitchen refresh is on your list for 2027, the time to plan it is now, before the spring calendar fills.
This guide covers what cabinet painting costs in Houston, how it compares with refacing and replacing, how a sprayed finish holds up in our humidity, and the honest cases where painting is the wrong call.
Why 2027 Is the Right Time to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets
There is no perfect year to update a kitchen, but a few things line up for 2027.
- Replacement is a big project. New cabinets mean new boxes, new doors, installation, and usually new countertops and backsplash, because old counters rarely survive removal.
- Painting is mostly prep and labor, not material. You keep the boxes, the counters and the layout. The money goes into degreasing, sanding, priming and a sprayed cabinet-grade finish, so the price stays predictable.
- Spring books first. Most homeowners want kitchen work done before summer heat, holiday hosting or a spring listing. An estimate in the winter gets you first pick of dates instead of whatever is left.
- Resale timing. If you plan to sell in the next year or two, a freshly painted kitchen helps the listing look move-in ready, and you get to enjoy it in the meantime. Pair it with exterior painting and the house makes a better first impression from the curb, too.
None of that requires predicting the market. It comes down to one thing: if your cabinet boxes are solid, painting gets you most of the visual change of a remodel for far less money and far less disruption.
What Cabinet Painting Costs Compared With Replacing
Painting is priced per door and drawer, and we publish our rates. For the full price list, typical totals by kitchen size and worked quote examples, see our kitchen cabinet painting cost breakdown. Replacement commonly runs several times the cost once new countertops are included.

Painted vs. Replaced Cabinets: Painting, Refacing and Replacing Compared
Here is how the three options stack up on the things that matter when you are deciding.
| Factor | Professional painting | Refacing | Full replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest of the three | More than painting: new doors, drawer fronts and veneer | Commonly several times the cost of painting |
| Timeline | About 1 week | 1 – 2 weeks | 4 – 8+ weeks |
| Disruption | Limited kitchen use for the week; counters and layout stay | Moderate; boxes stay in place | High: demolition, kitchen out of service, usually new counters |
| Lifespan | Years of daily use with proper prep and a cabinet-grade finish; touch-ups are possible | Depends on the veneer and door quality | Longest, since everything is new |
| Best for | Solid boxes, a layout you like, a new color | Sound boxes but a door style you want to change | Water damage, failing boxes or a new layout |

If you like your layout and the boxes are solid, painting wins on almost every line. If the layout is changing or the boxes are failing, you are looking at a remodel, and we will tell you so.
Do Painted Cabinets Hold Up in Houston Humidity?
Yes, when the prep and the product are right. Houston kitchens are hard on finishes: Gulf Coast humidity, steam from cooking and the dishwasher, grease near the range, and AC that dries the air out and then lets it swing back.
Paint does not fail because of the weather alone. It fails because the coating went onto a surface it could not grip, or it was handled before it cured.
What Makes a Cabinet Finish Last Here
- A real degrease. Kitchen grease is often invisible, and it is the number one reason painted cabinets peel. Every surface is cleaned with a degreaser before it is sanded.
- Dust-extraction sanding gives the primer something to bite into without coating the house in dust.
- A shellac-based bonding primer. We use BIN, which grips slick factory finishes and seals in wood tannins that would otherwise bleed through a white topcoat.
- A sprayed, cabinet-grade topcoat. Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series is our standard. The Renner 2K catalyzed system is the premium upgrade for heavy-use kitchens and sink bases that see a lot of water.
- Proper cure time. In humid weather, coatings need longer before doors are rehung and handled. Rushing that step is how finishes stick and mar.
Wall paint brushed on without a bonding primer is what gives painted cabinets a bad name. It stays soft and chips at the first bump. For more on chipping, and on which cabinet materials take paint well, see our kitchen cabinet painting questions guide.

The Cabinet Painting Process and How Long It Takes
Most Houston kitchens are finished in about a week. Here is how that week runs:
- Protect and seal the kitchen. Counters, floors, appliances and walls are covered, and the kitchen is sealed off from the rest of the house.
- Remove and label. Doors, drawer fronts and hardware come off and are labeled so everything goes back where it came from.
- Degrease and sand. Every surface is cleaned, then sanded with dust extraction.
- Prime. BIN shellac-based primer goes on the doors, drawer fronts, frames and boxes.
- Spray the finish. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in a booth we set up in your home, so nothing leaves the house. Frames and boxes are sprayed in place, with sanding between coats.
- Cure, reinstall and walk through. Pieces cure before they are handled, then they are rehung, adjusted and inspected with you.
Can You Stay Home While Cabinets Are Painted?
Yes. You do not need to move out. Plan on limited kitchen use for the week; a coffee maker and microwave set up in another room makes it easy.
Painting walls too? Scheduling interior painting for the same stretch keeps the disruption to one week instead of two.
Cabinet Colors to Consider for 2027 in Houston Homes
These cabinet colors work well in Houston kitchens heading into 2027:
- Warm whites and creams. Still the most requested. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster and Benjamin Moore White Dove stay soft in strong Texas sun instead of turning stark.
- Greige and mushroom tones. A good middle ground in open-plan homes where the kitchen sits right next to the living room.
- Sage and muted greens. Shades like Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog read calm and pair well with brass hardware.
- Two-tone kitchens. Light perimeter cabinets with a navy, deep green or charcoal island are a popular way to add color without committing the whole kitchen.
- Charcoal and near-black. Dramatic on shaker doors, especially with brass or matte black pulls.

Colors look different under Gulf Coast light than they do on a swatch card. Our guide to the best interior paint colors for Houston homes covers how whites and neutrals shift, and we bring samples to the estimate so you can see them in your own kitchen.
When Not to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets
Painting is not the answer for every kitchen, and we would rather tell you that at the estimate than after the job.
- Water-damaged particleboard. Swollen, crumbling sink bases from a slow leak will not hold paint. The leak has to be fixed and the damaged panels repaired or replaced first.
- Structural problems. Sagging boxes, broken face frames or doors that will not stay square need carpentry, not coatings.
- Peeling thermofoil or laminate. Once the surface film is lifting or bubbling, it is usually not worth painting.
- A new layout. If walls, appliances or the sink are moving, you are remodeling anyway.
- Failing DIY paint. Usually fixable, but it has to be sanded back to a sound surface first, which adds cost.
Small problems like a damaged sink base do not have to rule painting out. Our contracting crew can repair them first, so you still save the rest of the cabinets.
