Most Houston homeowners who call us about cabinet painting have already decided they want a lighter, cleaner kitchen. What they have not decided is whether to trust paint on the most-used surface in the house. They have seen a neighbor’s DIY job peel at the sink base, or heard that painted cabinets chip, and they want straight answers before they spend the money.
This guide answers the questions we hear on almost every estimate, from Katy to Kingwood. For pricing, see our kitchen cabinet painting cost breakdown. For the full step-by-step process, see our cabinet painting process guide.
Quick Answers for Houston Homeowners
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is it worth it? | Yes, if your cabinet boxes are sound. You get a new kitchen look for a fraction of replacement cost. |
| Will it chip or peel? | Not when the cabinets are degreased, sanded, primed with a bonding primer and sprayed with a cabinet-grade coating. |
| How long does it take? | Most Houston kitchens are finished within about a week. |
| Can I use my kitchen? | Partly. Plan on limited use for the week the work is underway. |
| What does it cost? | See our kitchen cabinet painting cost breakdown. |
| Is there a warranty? | Yes. Every job carries our 1-year workmanship warranty. |
Is Painting Kitchen Cabinets Worth It?
For most Houston kitchens, yes. A large share of homes in Cypress, Katy, Spring and The Woodlands were built with solid oak or maple cabinets that are structurally fine but look dated. Painting keeps the boxes, the countertops and the layout you already have, and changes the part everyone notices: the color and the finish.
Painting is the right call when:
- The cabinet boxes are solid and not swollen or delaminating from water.
- You like your layout and countertops, or you plan to replace counters but keep the cabinets.
- You want the work done in days, not the months a full remodel takes.
It is the wrong call when the sink base has rotted from a slow leak, the boxes are particleboard that is falling apart, or you are moving walls and appliances. In those cases our contracting and renovation team can help you plan a remodel instead. We will tell you honestly at the estimate which side of that line your kitchen is on.
Will Painted Cabinets Chip or Peel in Houston Humidity?
This is the number one worry, and it is a fair one. Painted cabinets fail for predictable reasons, and almost none of them are the paint color or brand:
- Painting over grease. Cooking grease builds an invisible film on doors near the range. Paint will not bond to it, no matter how good the paint is.
- Skipping the bonding primer. Factory cabinet finishes are hard and slick. Without sanding and a shellac-based primer, the new coating sits on top and lifts at the first bump.
- Using wall paint. Wall paint stays soft, sticks to itself when doors close, and scuffs easily.
- Rushing the cure. In Houston humidity, coatings need proper drying time before doors are rehung and handled.
Our cabinet refinishing service is built around those failure points: every surface is degreased, sanded with dust extraction, primed with BIN shellac-based primer, sanded between coats, and sprayed with Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series or the harder Renner 2K catalyzed system. The humidity side of the story is covered in more depth in our Houston climate and painting guide.
Can My Cabinets Be Painted? Wood, MDF, Laminate and Thermofoil
Not every cabinet material takes paint equally well. Here is how the common types in Houston homes compare:
| Cabinet material | Good candidate? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Solid oak | Yes | Open grain shows through paint. Grain filling gives a smooth, modern look. |
| Maple, cherry, birch | Yes | Tight grain paints smoothly. Primer blocks tannins from bleeding into white paint. |
| MDF doors and panels | Yes | Paints very well once sealed. Swollen edges from water damage need repair first. |
| Laminate | Sometimes | Needs scuff sanding and a strong bonding primer. Peeling or chipped laminate should be repaired or replaced. |
| Thermofoil (vinyl wrap) | Usually not | The plastic wrap often peels on its own, especially near the oven, and paint fails with it. |
If you are not sure what your cabinets are made of, that is fine. We check during the free estimate and tell you before you commit.
What About Oak Grain?
Oak is the most common cabinet we paint in Houston, and the grain is the most common question. Paint alone will not hide it. If you want a smooth, slab-like finish, oak grain filling is an add-on that fills the open pores before priming. If you like a little texture, we spray directly over the grain. You can compare both looks in our cabinet project gallery.
How Long Do Painted Cabinets Last?
A properly prepped and sprayed cabinet finish is built for years of daily use, not months. The difference between those two outcomes is almost entirely prep and product. A cabinet-grade coating cures much harder than wall paint, so it shrugs off the wipe-downs and door slams that wear out a DIY finish.
For the hardest-working kitchens, such as large families, heavy cooks or a busy sink base, the Renner 2K upgrade adds extra hardness plus better chemical and moisture resistance. For most homes, Gallery Series is the right balance of durability and value.
Can I Use My Kitchen During Cabinet Painting?
Partly. Most kitchens are finished within about a week, and you should plan on limited kitchen use during that time. Here is what the week looks like from your side:
- Doors stay in your home. We set up a spray booth on-site, so nothing is trucked to a shop and nothing gets damaged in transit.
- The kitchen is sealed off. Counters, floors, appliances and walls are covered, and dust-extraction sanding keeps dust out of the rest of the house.
- Some smell is normal. Shellac-based primer has a noticeable odor while it dries. Ventilation clears it, and the waterborne topcoats are milder.
- Plan simple meals. A coffee maker, microwave or grill setup in another room makes the week easy.
If you are painting other rooms too, it often makes sense to schedule them together. Our interior painting guide explains how we sequence multi-room projects.
How to Prepare Your Home for Cabinet Painting
A little preparation on your side makes the week go faster:
- Empty the cabinets and drawers you can, and box items you will need during the week.
- Clear the countertops of small appliances and decor.
- Decide on hardware early. Keeping the same pulls uses the existing holes. New hardware with a different spacing needs new holes, which is an add-on.
- Pick your color before the start date. Our guide to the best interior paint colors for Houston homes covers how whites and greiges look in Gulf Coast light.
- Plan for pets and kids. Keep them out of the sealed work area while coatings dry.
DIY vs. Hiring a Professional Cabinet Painter
DIY cabinet painting is possible, but it is the paint job we most often get called to fix. The problems are almost always the same: brush and roller marks on the doors, paint over grease, wall paint that never fully hardens, and doors that stick together because they were rehung too soon.
| Factor | Typical DIY | Professional refinishing |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Brushed or rolled, visible marks | Sprayed, smooth and even |
| Prep | Quick wipe and light sanding | Degrease, dust-extraction sanding, patching |
| Primer | General wall primer | BIN shellac-based bonding primer |
| Topcoat | Wall or enamel paint | Gallery Series or Renner 2K cabinet coating |
| Time | Several weekends | About a week |
| Warranty | None | 1-year workmanship warranty |
Already tried it yourself and the finish is failing? We can refinish cabinets that were previously painted. Failing layers have to come off or be sanded back to a sound surface first, and we will explain what that involves at the estimate.
Color, Two-Tone Kitchens and Hardware
Our standard price includes one color on doors, drawer fronts, boxes and frames. Two-tone kitchens, such as a navy or deep green island with white perimeter cabinets, are a popular add-on in Houston. Satin is the most requested sheen because it wipes clean and hides small dents and fingerprints better than semi-gloss.
Your existing hinges and hardware go back on, adjusted, along with protective bumpers so doors close quietly and protect the new finish. For popular cabinet colors in Houston homes, see the colors section of our cabinet painting guide.
How to Care for Painted Cabinets
- Go easy for the first couple of weeks. The finish keeps hardening after reinstall, so avoid hard scrubbing and heavy impacts.
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap. Skip abrasive pads and harsh solvent cleaners.
- Wipe splashes near the sink and range promptly, especially grease near the cooktop.
- Use the bumpers. They keep doors from banging directly against the frames.
- Call us for touch-ups. Small chips are far easier to fix early than after moisture gets under them.
Do Painted Cabinets Help When You Sell?
The kitchen is where buyers look hardest, and dated orange oak is one of the first things that makes a house feel like a project. A clean, professionally painted kitchen in a neutral color photographs well and helps a listing look move-in ready, without the cost of a remodel you will not get to enjoy. If you are getting ready to list, pair it with fresh interior wall painting so the whole house reads as updated.
The key is that the work has to look professional. A visibly DIY paint job with brush marks can hurt more than help, because buyers start wondering what else was done the same way.
