The prep that keeps cabinet paint from peeling in a humid, greasy Houston kitchen, which finish to choose, how long the work takes, and when painting beats replacing.

Cabinet painting in Houston is the fastest way to change how a kitchen looks without tearing it out. It is also the painting job most likely to go wrong. Cabinet doors get touched constantly, sit next to steam and grease, and Houston humidity turns every prep shortcut into chipping within a year.

This guide explains what a professional cabinet job involves, which finishes last, what it costs in Houston, and how to tell a real refinishing process from a quick brush-and-roll.

Why Houston Kitchens Are Hard on Cabinet Paint

Three things work against painted cabinets here:

  • Grease film. A thin layer of cooking grease builds up on doors near the range, and paint will not stick to it. Most peeling cabinets we see were painted over grease.
  • Humidity and steam. Sink bases, dishwasher sides, and doors above the stove see steam every day. Soft, slow-curing finishes stay tacky and pick up fingerprints and dents.
  • Slick factory finishes. Most builder-grade cabinets in Katy, Cypress, and The Woodlands come with a hard catalyzed factory lacquer. Paint slides right off it unless the surface is sanded and primed with the right primer.

None of these problems are solved by a better paint color. They are solved by prep and by using a coating built for cabinets, not walls.

Cabinet Painting vs. Replacing vs. Refacing

If your cabinet boxes are solid, painting almost always wins on cost and downtime. Here is how the three options compare:

The Professional Cabinet Painting Process

A factory-smooth finish comes from following the steps in order, every time. This is the process our cabinet refinishing service follows on every Houston kitchen:

  1. Remove and label. Doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and hardware come off and are labeled so each piece goes back where it came from.
  2. Protect and seal the kitchen. Countertops, floors, appliances, and walls are covered, and the room is sealed so dust stays out of the rest of the house.
  3. Degrease. Every surface is deep-cleaned with a degreaser. This is the step that separates a finish that lasts from one that peels.
  4. Sand with dust extraction. Sanding gives the primer something to grip. Dust-extraction sanders keep the mess out of your home.
  5. Patch and repair. Old hardware holes, dings, and chips are filled and sanded smooth.
  6. Prime with shellac-based primer. BIN shellac primer bonds to slick factory finishes and blocks wood tannins from bleeding through white paint.
  7. Spray the finish. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in an on-site spray booth; frames and boxes are sprayed in place, with sanding between coats.
  8. Cure, reinstall, and walk through. Pieces cure before they are handled, then go back up, get adjusted, and are inspected with you under your own kitchen lighting.

Brushing and rolling leaves marks that look homemade; spraying gives the smooth surface people expect. See finished cabinet projects in our gallery, including oak-to-white and maple-to-cream kitchens.

Choosing a Cabinet Paint and Sheen

Wall paint is the wrong product for cabinets. It stays soft, sticks to itself when doors close, and scuffs easily. A cabinet-grade coating cures much harder. We offer two systems:

  • Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series (standard). A high-performance waterborne coating made for cabinet refinishing. It sprays smooth, levels well, and is the right choice for most Houston kitchens.
  • Renner 2K catalyzed system (premium upgrade). A two-part coating that cures harder, with better chemical and moisture resistance. Worth it for heavy-use kitchens, sink bases, and high-end homes.

For sheen, satin is the most popular choice. It is easy to wipe down and hides small dents and fingerprints better than semi-gloss. Go glossier only if you want a modern, lacquered look and your doors are in excellent shape, since higher gloss shows every flaw.

Warm whites are still the most requested cabinet color in Houston, followed closely by two-tone kitchens. Popular choices include:

  • Warm whites like Sherwin-Williams Alabaster or Benjamin Moore White Dove, which stay soft under strong Texas sunlight.
  • Greige and taupe for a lower-maintenance look that hides everyday smudges.
  • Navy and deep green on islands and lower cabinets, paired with white uppers.
  • Charcoal and black for a modern shaker kitchen with brass or black hardware.

Your cabinets have to work with your walls, too. Our guide to the best interior paint colors for Houston homes covers how whites and neutrals shift in local light.

What Cabinet Painting Costs

Cabinet painting is priced per door and drawer, and we publish our rates. For the full price list, typical totals by kitchen size and worked quote examples, see our kitchen cabinet painting cost breakdown. Replacement commonly runs several times the cost once new countertops are included.

How Long It Takes and Living With the Work

Most Houston kitchens are finished within about a week, and your doors never leave the house. Plan on limited kitchen use that week. Once reinstalled, treat the finish gently for a couple of weeks while it fully hardens.

Kitchen cabinets are also a smart project for summer, when heat and storms slow outdoor work. We cover that seasonal planning in our Houston house painting climate guide.

How to Hire a Cabinet Painter in Houston

Before you hire anyone to paint your cabinets, ask:

  1. Do you spray or brush? Spraying is the professional standard for cabinet doors.
  2. What primer do you use on factory finishes? Look for a shellac-based or bonding primer, not a general wall primer.
  3. What topcoat, by name? A cabinet-grade coating, not wall paint.
  4. Is there a written warranty? Our work carries a 1-year workmanship warranty.
  5. Can I see before-and-after photos and reviews? Read reviews from Houston homeowners and look at real kitchens, not stock photos.
